  • Obesity is a condition in which excess fat is accumulated in the body and leads to negative health complications.  It refers to excess deposits of fat in the adipose tissue and is caused by excessive consumption of food.  The modern lifestyle leads many individuals to eat more food and burn less calories. A person is obese if their body mass index (BMI = weight divided by height squared) is 30 or higher.

Obesity can be caused by overeating, a low basal metabolism, thyroid or pituitary gland disorders, a sedentary lifestyle, genetic factors, or a hormonal imbalance. Obesity can be controlled through medications or by adopting certain home remedies.  Things as simple as a controlled diet and drinking specific juices can help control obesity.

Obesity: Herbal Home Remedies for Obesity

A person suffering from obesity should include French beans, figs, peaches, jackfruits, grapes, phalsa and guava in their daily diet. Drink a mixture of ¼ teaspoon black pepper, 3-4 teaspoons of lime juice, and 1 teaspoon of honey every day for three to four months to help control obesity.

Eating cabbage, and drinking carrot juice helps reduce weight and treat obesity. Including mint chutney in the daily diet helps reduce obesity. Drinking 10 to 15 grams of honey that has been mixed with hot water can help control obesity.

Eating eleven to twelve curry leaves for four months also helps; eating a tomato before breakfast for three to four months also helps with weight loss.  Drinking a mixture of 1 teaspoon honey and lime in lukewarm water at regular intervals throughout the day is also advisable. Drinking a cup of dandelion root tea three times a day on a regular basis also helps to control obesity. Drinking a hot mixture of boiled, sliced ginger and lemon also helps control obesity.

    Yoga and Obesity

To control obesity certain yogic asanas are recommended.  Asanas such as sarvangasana, naukasana, shalabhasnaa, dhanurasana, halasana, bhujangasana, chakrasana, paschimottasana, vajrasana, ardhmatsyendrasana, yogamudra and trikonasa help improve blood circulation and strengthen the body to help melt off excess fat.  Practicing yogic kriyas such as kunjal, jalaneti as well as pranayamas such as kapalbhati and bhastrika are also recommended in attempting to control body weight.
