Treatment that is undertaken which is not under the usual methods of treatment is called alternative medicine. When alternative medicine is combined with regular treatment it is known as complementary medicine. Some of the forms of alternative medicine are explained below with the first two being popular.
Acupuncture: It is a popular means of relieving pain. This is done by inserting tiny needles at specific parts of the body known as pressure points. These points are said to contain the vital energy of an individual. Acupuncture is effective in relieving pains especially backache and headaches. It is also used to treat cancer, during labor, injuries that occur in the knee, elbow, neck, and shoulder. However, it is not clear how acupuncture helps to relieve the pain.
Hypnosis: Hypnosis is a mental state whereby an individual uses his concentration for pain relief. It may use images, music or statements to relax the mind. It is an effective and simple way of pain relief. Self hypnosis is one such type of hypnosis which is practiced by an individual on himself using positive statements. In addition to using hypnosis for relieving pain during labor and surgery it is used for pains due to arthritis, cancer, headaches, and migraine and stress relief.
Biofeedback: Is a method which measures the functions of the body in order to treat them. This is done by projecting relaxing images in the mind. This helps in treating headaches, tension, blood pressure, migraines, urinary infection and other pain.
Massage: Massage involves applying pressure to different parts of the body either with hands or machines in order to relieve stress and different types of aches to the muscles and joints.
Relaxation Therapy: Relaxation therapy as the name implies uses special breathing techniques and muscle relaxation techniques to help a person relax. It helps treat arthritis, asthma, anxiety, depression, high and low blood pressure, stress and depression.
Physical therapy: Physical therapy helps with treating conditions like lower back pain, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, injuries due to sports, fractures or dislocations and stress disorders. It improves the individuals’ capability to function normally and move and reducing or eliminating the pain in the process.
