  • Sinusitis occurs when the mucous membranes that line the para-nasal sinuses become inflamed.  They can become inflamed as the result of a bacterial, fungal or viral infection or an allergic reaction to an irritant.  Sinusitis can be either acute or chronic.  Acute sinusitis refers to sudden onset of symptoms while chronic sinusitis refers to a long term condition.

The symptoms of sinusitis can resemble those of a common cold or flu.  Symptoms include excessive sneezing, a runny nose, a headache, the inability to breathe through the nose, and pressure around an individual’s head and eyes.  This article discusses the causes and symptoms of sinusitis as well as some easy home remedies to treat the illness.

    What causes sinusitis?
Sinusitis occurs when the mucous membranes of the sinus passageways become inflamed.  This inflammation can cause an over secretion of mucus in the nose and throat.  Sinusitis can also be the result of a deviated septum or swollen bones in the nasal vicinity.  Sinusitis can be bacterial, fungal or viral in nature.  People with allergies or a respiratory tract infection are more susceptible to getting sinusitis.  Medical conditions such as tumors or cystic fibrosis can cause the infection.

    What are symptoms of sinusitis?
The symptoms of sinusitis often mimic those of a common cold or the flu at first.  Symptoms include excessive sneezing, a runny nose, blocked nasal passageways, and pressure around the top portion of the face.  A person can also have a low fever with sinusitis.  Blocked nasal passageways will make it difficult to breathe.  The blockage can cause pain and discomfort, especially around the ears.  An excess of mucus will be produced by the nose and throat.  The pain and discomfort may make the individual irritable.  They may also lose their sense of smell and taste.

    Home remedies
Raw vegetable juice is widely used to treat sinusitis.  Mix together 300 ml of carrot juice with 200 ml of spinach juice and 100 ml each of cucumber juice and beet juice.  Drink this mixture daily until the symptoms subside.  Fruits and other foods that are high in vitamin A are also an effective way to treat sinusitis.  These foods include mangoes, pumpkin, papaya, carrots, and whole milk.

Thanks for this article. I just wanted to note that I have been a sinusitis sufferer on and off for years. I couldn’t ever completely get rid of it until I found oil of oregano. I don’t like to take prescription medication and truly believe in the healing powers of alternative healing with herbs and vitamins. But, I was to my wits end with trying to self-cure myself, so I went to the doctor. After 2 rounds of antibiotics, it was not getting better. My lymph glands started to swell in my neck and armpit…I was becoming toxic. So, by accident, I found some research on herbal products. I started taking these home remedies and almost instantly my sinus’s started to loosen up. I took it for about 15 days total to make sure that it was all gone and it was! After this, I started to do more and more research on the benefits of natural herbal products and now use it for other things as well since it is a natural anti-fungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral! I love this stuff!

      Hi Heather,

Thank you for your post. I awoke this morning to Post Nasal Drip (chronic sinusitis sufferer) for almost 2 yrs.. Recently read that sinusitis is an immune disorder and an inflammation can be cured by taking an anti-fungal medication. I wanted to do this naturally did not know how until I found your post I will try these home remedies. Thanks again.

Your welcome! It has helped me tremediously! Especially this time of year with allergies, that makes my sinus problems worse and usually will flare up a sinus infection! I’ve been taking these home remedies for the last couple of days because of my allergies….trying to prevent a sinus infection. Give it a couple of days to work, depending on how bad your sinus infection is. Make sure to drink plenty of water to help get the infection out of your body and to help thin the mucus. Glad to help!
