  • When a person gets a toothache they feel pain and tenderness in the tooth and surrounding area.  The medical term for a toothache is odontalgia.  A toothache usually occurs when the nerve located in the root of the tooth becomes irritated.  A toothache can be a dull, throbbing sensation or outright severe pain.  When the tooth comes in contact with food, drinks and even contact with air the pain can be exacerbated.  Toothaches usually result from a person’s dietary choices and hygiene practices.  This article discusses the causes and symptoms of toothaches.

    What causes a toothache?
Toothaches tend to happen because a person either has a poor diet or they have poor oral hygiene.  They can also result from injuries to the mouth and teeth.  People that consume foods and beverages high in sugar are prone to toothaches.  This poor diet in combination with not properly brushing and flossing the teeth after eating and drinking can instigate the ailment.

Toothaches may also result from damage or injury to the mouth or tooth.  People who crack or fracture their teeth will experience a toothache.  Tooth infections such as dental decay and cavities will also cause pain in the infected tooth.  Certain medical conditions such as gum disease, impacted teeth, emerging wisdom teeth, acute ulcerative gingivitis, and pericoronitis can cause toothaches.

What are symptoms of a toothache?
When a person gets a toothache they will feel some sort of pain or discomfort of the tooth and possibly the surrounding area.  The affected area will become sensitive to eating or drinking anything that is hot or cold.  The infected area can become swollen and either bleed or have a discharge.

    Home remedies
Both raw onions and raw garlic are two effective ways to treat toothaches.  It may not seem palatable but chewing a raw onion or garlic clove every morning will kill the germs in the mouth, ease the pain and even strengthen the teeth.  Lime is a good source of vitamin C and can therefore cure any dental problem including a toothache.  Some alcoholic beverages can help with toothaches.  Soak a cotton ball in either brandy or whiskey and place it over the tooth.  Gargling whiskey will help disinfect the mouth.
