Causes and Treatment of Cholesterol

  • Cholesterol is a yellow, fatty material made by the liver and found in the cells of the body.  It is vital to life because it helps the body to function correctly.

Cholesterol is also found in many of the foods we eat. It is important that individuals avoid eating too many products that contain high levels of cholesterol.  Excess cholesterol can build up in the arteries, which can cause them to narrow and harden.  This condition can lead to many other serious health problems.

Once excess levels of cholesterol get into the blood, the risk of heart disease increases.  Reducing your cholesterol level will greatly lessen your chances of developing several life-threatening diseases and enable you to live a longer, healthier life.

    Causes of high cholesterol

    • Heredity

    • An excessive intake of certain high cholesterol foods (such as milk, fried foods, rich foods, butter, sweets)

    • Using tobacco products

    • Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol

    • Stress

    • Obesity

Helpful tips to reduce or maintain cholesterol levels

Don’t eat foods rich in cholesterol and saturated fats. Reduce the ingestion of meats, as well as coconut and palm oils. Drink plenty of water (up to 10 glasses per day). Exercise regularly. Stop using tobacco products. Reduce your intake of alcohol. Follow a healthy dietary plan

Home remedies to reduce or maintain cholesterol levels

Fiber – Eating plenty of fiber will reduce your cholesterol.  It is found in foods such as wheat bran, wholegrain cereals, legumes, carrots, turnips, celery, and oat bran. Sunflower seeds – Eat these to reduce cholesterol deposits on the arterial walls. Lecithin – Eat products rich in lecithin to break cholesterol down into small pieces your body can handle.  Lecithin is found in egg yolks, wholegrain cereals, soybeans, and vegetable oils.

Vitamin B6 – Take supplements or eat foods rich in Vitamin B6, such as wheat germ, bran, and yeast.  Vitamin E – Take Vitamin E supplements or eat foods rich in Vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, soybean oils, and grains.  Vitamin E reduces blood lecithin levels.
