  • Hives is the common term for the medical condition urticaria.  Hives can occur from an allergic reaction or non-allergic reactions.  They are caused by the chemical histamine, which causes the skin to turn red.  When they occur, the person’s skin gets patches of welts that are red, raised and cause the person to itch.  These patches can show up in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Hives can surface anywhere on a person’s body, including their midsection, face and lips, inside the mouth and throat, and on a person’s arms and legs.

Hives typically occur when a person has an allergic reaction to something, such as medication, certain foods such as eggs and nuts, and even insect bites or jellyfish stings.  Non-allergic hives can be caused by the person wearing clothing that fits too tight, exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, can be a genetic condition, or can be caused by sweat.  This article discusses several simple ways to treat hives at home using products that are commonly found in the kitchen.

    Home remedies for hives
The best and easiest way to treat hives is to apply cool compresses to the affected areas.  If too much of the body is covered in hives, try taking a cool, soothing shower.  Try adding cornstarch and baking soda to a warm bath to soothe the itching sensation.  Vitamin E oil is a natural way to cure hives.  Apply some vitamin E oil to a cotton ball and gently apply it to the infected areas.  Aloe Vera works just as vitamin E oil does.  Apply the pulp of the Aloe Vera plant or an Aloe Vera cream to the red, itchy bumps.

There are several teas that can cure hives.  Some teas to try are peppermint tea, chamomile tea, valerian tea or a mixture of two teaspoons of powdered stinging nettle with a teaspoon of honey or lemon juice.  Foods that contain Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Zinc will help cure hives.  Make a paste by combining 2 cups of oatmeal with three teaspoons of cornstarch.  Apply the paste until it dries.
