Causes and Treatment of Insomnia

  • Insomnia is more than an ailment; it is a disorder.  When a person is unable to sleep they are said to suffer from insomnia.  People who suffer from insomnia may experience a hard time either falling asleep or staying asleep at night.  Insomnia affects not only how a person sleeps and recovers at night, but how a person performs the next day.  Insomnia has become very commonplace in today’s society due to the increasing levels of stress that people experience. 

    A person suffering from insomnia will display symptoms such as difficulty falling asleep, possibly waking up during the course of sleep, and having a hard time getting back to sleep once they have awakened during the night.  Some people rely on sleeping pills to help them combat insomnia.

    There are several causes of insomnia.  Some reasons that people may experience insomnia are anxiety and stress, anger and resentment, high intake of caffeinated products or cigarettes, excessive eating, or the inability to have a bowel movement for a few days.  Insomnia can, however, be treated without taking prescription drugs.  This article discusses several ways that insomnia can be treated at home using natural remedies.

    Home remedies for insomnia
    One way to treat insomnia is to get the body’s circadian rhythm into a specific pattern.  Try going to bed at night and getting up in the morning at the same time every day.  After a while, the body will become accustomed to the new pattern.  A person who exercises regularly tends not to have a problem sleeping at night.  Start a moderate exercise routine that involves walking, running or swimming.  The body will force itself to rest and recover after a day of exercising.

    Try something that Grandma always did.  Drink a cup of warm milk with honey prior to going to bed.  It always worked for her!  Poppy seeds have a very sedating effect on the body.  Extract thirty grams of milk from poppy seeds and drink it with sugar after consuming the evening meal.  Mash a ripe banana with roasted cumin seeds and eat the mixture prior to going to bed.
