Perioral Dermatitis Definition
The skin disorder perioral dermatitis will have red tiny papules around the mouth. This problem is common among young women; but it can also affect men and children. The word “Perioral” indicates the space around your mouth whereas “dermatitis” refers to an irritation or rash. The areas commonly affected by this skin disorder are lip borders, chin and nose facial lines.
What are the reasons for occurrence of Perioral Dermatitis?
The reason for perioral dermatitis is not clearly known. As per the recent findings it appears that if the hair follicles are proliferated with bacteria this could occur. The following are common causes for this.
• Any extended therapy using topical corticosteroids
• Using toothpaste that contains lauryl sulfate.
• Middle aged/ young women are affected by this.
• Sunlight, heat, wind, hot water and chlorinated water worsen the area affected.
• Use of cosmetics, contraceptive pill and mental stress worsens this.
What are Perioral Dermatitis Symptoms?
The perioral dermatitis is characterized by a burning uncomfortable feeling around your mouth. Not much of itching is noticed. There will be papules or bumps with fluid or pus in the affected area. Patients are worried about the cosmetic appearance due to lesions.
How to treat Perioral Dermatitis?
The following treatments are available for perioral dermatitis. The treatment is likely to last for months.
• Stop using topical steroids/ corticosteroids, sunscreens and cosmetics.
• If the rash exists, wash your face only with warm water. Once it gets cleared use water and liquid cleanser.
• Use toothpaste that does not contain lauryl sulfate.
• Use oral antibiotics like tetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline or erythromycin severe cases.
• If you discontinue antibiotics this might recur; you may have to repeat the treatment.
• Use medicines such as metronidazole, benzoyl peroxide, erythromycin, pimecrolimus or tacrolimus on prescription from your doctor.
How do you prevent Perioral dermatitis?
There is no known method that gives 100% guarantee for preventing perioral dermatitis. It is essential that you avoid applying on your face corticosteroid creams that are fluorinated. Consult your dermatologist on using moisturizers, sunscreens and cosmetics; also get advice on using fluoride toothpaste, tartar cinnamon flavoring or control ingredients.
