When chemicals in the urine such as uric acid, phosphorus and oxalic acid exceed the solubility in the urine they tend to form kidney stones that are found in the kidneys or appear in the urine. Kidney stones or renal calculi resemble grains of sand and are crystalline in nature. They may vary in size from grit, sand and gravel-like obstructions to the size of a bird’s egg. Kidney stones are more common in middle aged individuals with men being afflicted more often than women.
What causes kidney stones?
The formation of kidney stones is the outcome of defects in general metabolism. These stones are usually formed when the urine becomes highly concentrated due to heavy perspiration or insufficient intake of fluids. Other causes of formation of kidney stones include intake of excessive acid forming foods, white flour, sugar, tea, coffee, condiments and spices and overeating. Deficiency of vitamin A and an excessive intake of Vitamin D can also lead to the formation of these stones.
Symptoms:
Urinary stones cause severe pain while passing down the ureter on their way to the bladder. This pain is considered to be the worst pain known to man and is initially felt in the back or side and increases the risk of kidney and urinary tract infection. The pain can spread to the groin and thighs and is accompanied by a strong urge to urinate frequently, painful urination, scanty urination, shock, nausea, sweating and chills.
Help for kidney stones:
The treatment of kidney stones usually depends on the type, size and underlying causes of stone formation. Most of the patients suffering from urinary stones can be treated by regulating their diet and bringing about some changes in their lifestyle pattern.
Diet: Foods that tend to irritate the kidneys should be eliminated from the diet in order to control acidity of the urine. All foods rich in oxalate such as dark green vegetables, nuts and chocolates should be avoided. The patient should intake adequate amount of fluids to prevent the concentration of urine and must avoid condiments, meat, pickles, carbonated water and certain vegetables such as watercress, onions, beans, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach, tomatoes, radishes and rhubarb.
Holy basil for treating kidney stones: Basil or tulsi has a strengthening effect on the kidneys and is highly beneficial for treating this condition. It is recommended for you to take basil juice and honey for a period of 6 months in order to expel the stones from the urinary tract.
Water: It is essential for patients suffering from renal calculi to drink 8- 10 glasses of water per day to prevent concentration of urine and urinary tract infection. You must gradually increase your intake of water in order to keep the urine clear. If your urine is clear or light yellow you are drinking enough water, but if it is dark yellow then you need to increase your daily fluid intake.
