Colon cleansing- the natural way
The colon or the large intestine is an integral part of the body’s digestive system. It is a part of the gastrointestinal tract and is located below the small intestinal and joins the rectum. The large intestine is about 5 feet long and is responsible for the absorption of water and minerals and expelling the waste matter or excreta from the body. If the colon is not properly cleansed it may increase the toxic levels of the body and cause various problems such as abdominal pain, constipation and fatigue. In certain cases an unclean colon can also result in cancer or immune system dysfunction.
Natural method of colon cleansing:
Go high on fiber: The first and foremost step for cleansing the colon is to take lots of raw fruits and vegetables that have high fiber content. This assists in proper bowel movements and helps expel the toxic waste from the body.
Say no to toxic foods: Foods such as caffeine, sugar, processed or fermented foods, aspartame, microwave cooked food and deep fried foods are unhealthy for the stomach. They contain various toxic substances that are extremely harmful for the body and disrupt the normal working of the large intestine.
Triphala or Terminalia bellirica is a popular herbal remedy that is recommended for colon cleansing as it promotes good colon health and is a natural laxative that works without causing irritation or stomach cramps. It is available as herbal dietary supplement capsules and should be taken on a daily basis to boost the proper functioning of the colon.
Liquid bentonite: Take 1 tbsp of liquid bentonite along with 1 tbsp of flax seeds in a glass of water before breakfast every morning. Do not eat anything for about ½ an hour after taking this mixture. This augments the bowel movements and helps cleanse the colon naturally.
Fasting: Individuals suffering from the inability to cleanse their colon should fast for a day and stick to a liquid diet. They should drink only water, fruit juices and herbal infusion to expel the harmful waste matter from their body.
Colon cleansing with herbs: Natural colon cleansing requires you to fast for a whole day and consume herbs such as psyllium husk seeds, fennel, flax seeds, aloe leaf, cascara, ginger, and cayenne pepper that help eliminate the toxic substances for the system by stimulating the bowel movements. These herbs are known to kill worms and parasites, improve digestion and stimulate the secretion of digestive juices. Barberry is a bitter herb that helps promote the functioning of the liver and gall bladder and garlic and fennel help kill the harmful bacteria thriving on the colon.
Water: Drinking at least 15-16 glasses helps stimulate the process of colon cleansing. Water flushes out the harmful toxins from the body, aids in digestion and keeps you hydrated.
