  • A peptic ulcer is a painful medical condition in which improper digestion and other causes lead to overproduction of stomach acids and digestive enzymes. This corrodes the mucus lining of the walls of the stomach and upper small intestine, where most of the digestion takes place. The inner walls get sores and if unchecked, might even get perforated, resulting in an extremely painful condition.

Peptic ulcer is commonly recognized after the patient suffers constant pain in the abdomen, which usually occurs before and after mealtimes and also when the patient feels hungry. There is a dull, gnawing pain in the stomach and the abdomen remains bloated after meals. Soon, a loss of appetite occurs, accompanied with other signs like excessive vomiting and nausea, black or bloody stools, feeling full at all times etc. Peptic ulcers usually occur in the stomach, the duodenum (upper small intestine) or the esophagus. In some cases, peptic ulcer may indicate internal tumor or cancer and may be fatal, if not treated immediately by surgery.

It has been widely observed that in most peptic ulcer cases, a wide population of the bacterium H.Pylori in the stomach walls has been reported. As the bacteria colonize themselves in the mucus walls, they simulate the overproduction of gastric acids and cause inflammation. The use of steroids and medications like ibuprofen and aspirin, usually by middle-aged and elderly patients taking these medicines for other diseases, has been linked with the formation of peptic ulcers.

    Safe treatment of peptic ulcer

While endoscopy procedures and surgery are the main options for severely afflicted patients, doctors generally recommend a huge intake of various medicines, which may have their own side-effects. A good diet and lifestyle can do wonders in preventing stomach corrosion and providing relief from peptic ulcers.

It has been noted that relying heavily on spicy food for all nutrition; heavy smoking, consuming less amount of water and handling enormous stress have a huge hand in causing peptic ulcers. Milk was usually thought to be good for stomach ulcers, but medical experts now believe otherwise. It is important to have meals regularly even during loss of appetite. Having regular small meals is safer to avoid over-buildup of stomach acids. Have a lot of fiber-rich foods like cabbage and leafy vegetables. Raw bananas are very good for people suffering from peptic ulcers. Drink a lot of water. Avoid adding a lot of sugar and sugary foods to your diet.

A lot of herbs like gooseberry and long pepper are well-known for relieving stomach from acid pains. A good herbal supplement is Acigon Syrupaci which contains anti-ulcer extracts. Regular intake of Acigon before meals provides relief in one or two days.
