Depression – Causes and Cures
Depression is a state of mind and not a disease. In its simplest form, it may be addressed as an imbalanced state of body, mind and thinking processes, when the three can’t work in cohesion. The compulsions of changed lifestyles brought about in the last few decades, coupled with technological changes, have been contributing to this illness that continues to engulf more and more people.
Because of certain psychological changes caused by this illness, it’s very difficult for the sufferer to carry out normal functions, including his work or even social obligations. Consequently, it is not his life alone but that of his loved ones too that gets affected. Its intensity may vary from being mild or moderate to severe.
Repeated failure to deal with undue or excessive mental tension leads to depression. For quite a few people, leading a very monotonous life without any excitement of any kind may cause a mild form of depression. Administration of improper or prolonged use of antibiotics is also known to result in depression. Poor relationships with immediate members of the family or sudden and tragic loss of a dear one is known to have caused depression. In certain cases, inappropriate menstrual cycles and experiencing menopause are also responsible for such a state of mind.
Those engulfed by depression have to largely depend on self-help and a supporting but firm attitude of people around them, as well as proper medication.
Some of the visible symptoms of depression are loss of appetite and thus disturbed sleep, continued feeling of listlessness or maintaining a low self-esteem, and getting irritated over petty matters. The behavioral changes may vary from crying to getting violent.
The most effective and practical way to fight depression is to maintain a positive attitude towards life and drive away negativity in any form. Depending on the intensity, medication is required to treat this illness. Apart from a change in attitude, dietary changes should also be incorporated for fast recovery. Having balanced and nutritious food is very important and helpful.
Include nuts and cheese in the daily diet. Certain special baths provide relief. For instance, keeping your feet immersed in hot water containing rosemary leaves with a small volume of chlorine and bathing soap may prove to relieve one person, while having a spinal bath in a specially designed bath tub may help another.
