Eczema and Herbal Remedies

  • The origin for the word “Eczema” is Greek and it means ‘to boil’. This is a chronic non-contagious skin disorder that is also known as dermatitis. Any skin inflammation results in forming of skin eruptions. Normally only children are affected by Eczema; it is found rarely in adults. People having Eczema find that it causes skin itching, dryness, redness and flakiness. Normally it affects hands, arms, wrists, neck and chest, face and rear part of the knees.

    What causes Eczema?

    Some of the reasons that cause eczema are varicose veins, allergies, dry and cold weather, deficiency in nutrition etc.

    What are the natural home remedies for Eczema?

    Some of the natural home remedies for eczema are detailed in the following paragraphs.

    Applying coconut oil over the affected area makes it soft and smooth. Applying mudpack on the affected area is useful. Add camphor (1 tsp) to sandalwood paste (1 tsp); apply on the eczema. Prepare a paste using turmeric powder and neem leaves (one tbsp each) and apply on affected area. Water is useful for treating eczema; apply cold compress or wet fomentations twice a day. Put a few almond leaves in water and mash them. Apply on eczema affected area.

    Rub nutmeg on a stone surface that is smooth and add a small quantity of water to form a paste. Apply on eczema affected area. Heat mustard oil 200 gm in an iron vessel until it reaches the boiling temperature; add clean fresh neem leaves in the hot oil. The leaves will turn black and then you filter this oil Apply on eczema four times in a day. Mash the seeds of papaya and prepare a paste; apply on eczema; this reduces itching.

    Use cotton ball and dab on the eczema area witch hazel. Apply juice taken from spearmint leaf. Sun bathing kills bacteria that are harmful and hence cures eczema.

    Avoid applying chemicals, soaps and drying agents on eczema.

    Boil the mixture of the following ingredients for a period of 35 minutes. Wash eczema with it.
    o Comfrey root – one tsp
    o White oak bark – one tsp
    o Slippery elm bark
    o Water – 2 cups
