Herbal remedies for Diarrhea

Diarrhea is commonly known as ‘loose motions’. It refers to the frequent passage of loose or watery unformed stools. It is one of the commonest diseases but may be acute or chronic in nature. The small intestine generally gets more than ten liters of liquid per day which comes from the diet and from secretions of the intestines, pancreas, liver and stomach. Other causes include germs, parasites, bacteria, virus or a poison which has entered into the body through water, food or air; allergies to certain substances or even common foods such as milk, eggs, wheat and sea foods; fright in children and emotional strain or stress in the adults.

Herbal remedies for Diarrhea

Turmeric has proved to be a herbal remedy for diarrhea. It is a very beneficial for intestinal antiseptic. It is also a tonic and gastric stimulant. One tablespoon of fresh turmeric rhizome juice may be taken in one glass of plain water.

In case of diarrhea caused by indigestion, fresh or dry ginger is very useful. A piece of dry ginger should be powdered with a crystal of rock salt, and half a teaspoon of this powder should be taken with a small piece of jaggery. It will bring quick relief as ginger, being carminative and aids digestion by stimulating the gastrointestinal tract.

A dried extract of connessi  bak, coneru or Tellichery bark. The Holarrhena is an important herb in Ayurvedic medical science. The connessi tree is very famous in south Asian region for its various medicinal properties. The bark of the tree has been used even by British material medical for a long time. The herb is considered as one of the most effective remedies for treating gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea.

Mint juice is also very useful in the treatment of diarrhea. One tablespoon of fresh mint juice, mixed with a tablespoon each of lime juice and honey, can be given thrice daily with excellent results in the treatment of diarrhea.
