Herbal Treatment for Asthma

  • An incurable ailment related to respiratory problems, ‘Asthma’ is also an old Greek word meaning ‘short drawn breath’ or ‘panting’. This is a disease that takes its toll on young or old. Conditions like too much mucus in the breathing passage, wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and also constriction in the air passage are all causes of asthma.

    A partial block caused in the windpipe by a foreign body entering causes the irritation experienced in this condition. It is also an allergic condition and can be triggered by the exposure of the individual to allergen, pet dander, moisture in the air, excessive exertion and exercise, tobacco smoke, warm or cold air, perfumes and emotional stresses.

    Several natural remedies can be used in the home to treat this condition. Here they are:

    Remedies you can Use at Home for Asthma

    A ripe banana should be warmed over a slow fire. Sprinkle black pepper over it after mashing it. This provides immediate relief. Grind some basil leaves and water into a paste of about 20 ml quantity and mix with about 13 millilitres of fresh honey. This can be used whenever you think an attack is on the way.

    Wash some holy basil leaves very thoroughly. Sprinkle with black salt and eat. An effective cure for asthma is to eat roasted grams at night washed down by warm milk. One of the best remedies is to mix turmeric grounded with a pestle and mortar in to a fine powder, with honey. One tablespoon of turmeric powder and 2 tablespoons of honey should go in to the mix and eaten.

    Rock salt and mustard oil made in to a paste can be rubbed on the chest and would help stop the attack from coming on. Boil down a glass of water with two teaspoons of fenugreek seed till it reduces to just one third of the quantity. Drink after letting it cool.

    Another home remedy to cure asthma is to eat 3 or 4 dried figs each morning. A teaspoon of powdered turmeric blended with a glassful of warm milk will keep the attacks away. A tablespoon of safflower seeds blended with a tablespoon of honey can be eaten daily. Take 125 ml of honey, 50 grm banyan root and 250 grm of Indian gooseberry and mix into a paste. Eat it a teaspoon at a time.

    A glassful of lime juice with a teaspoon of ginger juice added in is another good remedy. Put ten cloves of garlic in to a glass quantity of milk.  Bring it to the boil, take it off the fire, strain and cool. This decoction drunk regularly will help reduce asthmatic attacks.
