Herbal treatment for scurvy

  • Scurvy is a condition associated with general weakness, anemia, skin bleedings and gum disease caused by a prolonged deficiency of vitamin C or ascorbic acid in the diet. Vitamin C plays a vital role in the formation of collagen, a major component of connective tissue.

    Jaundice berry is a valuable medicinal herb used for scurvy. The leaves of the plant are effectively anti-scorbutic or anti-scurvy. Boil 15 gm of dried leaves in halt liter of water till it is reduced by one-third. Take 1 ounce of the decoction at a time. The juice of the berry is also very useful.

    Green mangoes are skinned, stoned, cut into pieces, dried in the sun and powdered. Fifteen grams of this powder is believed to be equivalent to thirty grams of good lime on account of its citric content. Mix one table spoon of this powder in a glass of water and have it three times daily for better result.

    Potato is also rich in vitamin C and is considered as an excellent food for scurvy.  It has been noted that scurvy in Europe has become uncommon with the progress of potato cultivation and it makes its appearance only when the crop fails.

    Lime and lemon is highly beneficial in the treatment and prevention of scurvy. Being rich sources of vitamin C, lime and lemon are considered as foods of exceptional therapeutic value. The juice of one lime or lemon mixed in a cup of water, with a teaspoon of honey, should be taken for at least one month to treat this condition. Daily intake of diluted lemon juice with water is useful to compensate the vitamin C deficiency.

    Avoid eating processed foods and instead eat fresh fruits and green vegetables. You can help get rid of scurvy with a well planned, well-regulated diet of food that is healthy and well balanced.

    The Indian gooseberry is the richest source of vitamin C and it is one of the most effective treatments for scurvy.  It can be used in any form, either as a raw fruit, as a pickle or in the form of juice. Dry Indian gooseberry should be powdered well. Mix one tablespoon of this twice a day with a cup of water.
