Herbs for treating insomnia

Insomnia is one of the most common sleeping disorders affecting a large number of individuals across the globe. It is referred to the inability to falling or staying asleep for an adequate period of time. Insomnia can result in loss of appetite, headache, irritability, inability to concentrate, confusion and fatigue. The factors responsible for causing insomnia are increased levels of stress, mental tension, overexcitement, work overload, constipation, over-eating, excessive smoking and excessive intake of tea or coffee.

There are various sleeping pills that can be taken to combat insomnia, but are accompanied by a host of harmful side effects and the risk of addiction. Thus, more and more individuals are looking for herbal remedies that can help fight insomnia naturally and effectively. The various herbs for treating insomnia include:

Valerian: This is one of the most effective herbs for treating insomnia. It is known to have powerful sedative qualities and helps relax the central nervous system and smooth muscles. It has been used as a potent sleeping aid since ancient times and helps curb the feelings of nervousness and over excitability. It is a non-addictive herb and helps combat insomnia effectively, thereby improving the sleep quality.

Chamomile: This herb has been widely used since ancient times as a mild sleeping aid and helps treat insomnia naturally and effectively.  It helps relax the smooth muscle groups and combats stress and anxiety. You can brew 1 tsp of dried chamomile flowers in a cup of hot water and add ½ tsp of honey to it. Drinking this infusion helps calm the mind and induces sleep.

Bacopa: Brahmi or Bacopa herbal dietary supplements help combat insomnia and relax the mind. The mild sedative and tranquilizing action of this product helps  induce sleep and calms the senses. It is recommended to take Brahmi herbal capsules on a daily basis to overcome insomnia.

For me, the worst part about suffering from insomnia was the decreased ability to concentrate. My head often felt like it was filled with cotton wool and it was having a real affect on my career. My boss didn’t understand the severity of the problem and would just respond with “Go to bed earlier then!”. Not helpful at all.

We recommend you to start practicing meditation and take Ashwagandha before going to bed with milk to get natural sound sleeps. This is natural non habit forming medicine to regularize body`s sleeping habits and relaxing mind. Further queries are welcome.
