  • What are Pitted keratolysis?
    This is a skin disorder wherein a bacterial infection affects mainly the soles of your feet; it could affect your palms also. This is noninflammatory and is characterized by depressions in the outermost layer of the epidermis in particular weight-bearing areas.

    The affected person notices it by increase in sweating and odor. The bacterium that causes this is called micrococcus sedantarius; some people are of the opinion that the bacterium Dermatophilus congolensis is responsible for this. You will also notice on the heels, webspace and forefoot small erosions that are circular in nature.

    The alternate name for this is sweaty sock syndrome. If you wear footwear that are tight as well as restrictive and also if you sweat profusely while doing your exercises you might get this.

    How to treat Pitted keratolysis?
    The most important thing that you should do to treat Pitted keratolysis is to take adequate measures to ensure good hygiene; in addition you may have to take topical medicines including oral medications.

    • Take/ apply topical antibiotics such as fucidin ointment, gel of benzoyl peroxide, erythromycin and clindamycin. These are quite effective.
    • While taking bath, people who are affected by Pitted keratolysis must ensure that their feet are scrubbed well using an antibacterial soap, washed properly and then dried well. It is also preferable to dry the skin thoroughly. Also apply an antiperspirant spray that you use for spraying underarm.
    • Patients affected by Pitted keratolysis must ensure that they wear cotton socks or socks made using synthetic material that has absorbing capabilities; also you must change the socks often. This means that you must carry extra socks either for your work or to school. You must also ensure that you change the socks after doing your strenuous exercises.

    How to prevent Pitted keratolysis?
    Take the following precautions to avoid getting Pitted keratolysis.
    • Avoid sharing your towels and footwear with anybody.
    • Change your shoes everyday; you should make sure that the shoes are dried before wearing.
    • Boots should not be worn for a long period.
    • Everyday wash your feet twice daily with either antibacterial cleanser or soap.
