  • The term Diabetes Mellitus had been derived from the Greek words meaning ‘to pass through’ and ‘honey’. It is a nutritional disorder that is characterized by an elevated level of blood sugar and the excretion of excess glucose in the urine. The normal volume of urine passed on a daily basis is about 1- ½ liter, but in the diabetic condition it can range from 4-20 liters.

The urine is pale in color and has an acidic reaction and sweet odor. A diabetic individual feels hungry and thirsty most of the time, looses weight and is fatigued easily. Other symptoms include intense itching around the genitals, constipation, anemia, low sex drive and general weakness.

    Causes of Diabetes Mellitus:
Diabetes results from the absolute or relative lack of insulin leading to abnormalities in the carbohydrate metabolism as well as the metabolism of protein and fat. It is caused by excessive intake of sugar, refined carbohydrates, proteins and fats which are transformed into sugar, when taken in excess. Too much food taxes the pancreas and eventually paralyses its normal activity.

As per research, it is estimated that individuals of moderate obesity are four times at a higher risk of developing diabetes and individuals of severe obesity are thirty times at a higher risk of developing this disease. Other factors that lead to the development of diabetes are stress, mental tension and heredity.

Benefits of bitter gourd for combating Diabetes:

Bitter gourd is one of the best natural remedies for treating diabetes mellitus. It works on an insulin like principle known as plant insulin which has been found effective in lowering the blood and urine sugar levels and should be liberally included in the diet of diabetic individuals. Alternatively, you can extract the juice of 4- 5 bitter gourds and drink it every morning on an empty stomach. The seeds of bitter gourd can also be added to the food in a powdered form.

    Jamboline lowers high blood sugar:

Jambul fruit is also highly beneficial for lowering serum and urine sugar. It has been used to treat diabetes since ancient times because of its effect on the pancreas. The seeds of Jambul contain jamboline, a glucoside which controls the conversion of starch into sugar thereby, treating diabetes. Jambul seeds should be dried and powdered and should be taken with milk, curd or water for best results.

    Manganese for controlling Diabetes:

Manganese is vital for the production of natural insulin and helps treat diabetes mellitus effectively. Citrus fruits, outer covering of nuts, grains and green leafy vegetables are rich sources of manganese.
