  • Peptic ulcers are eroded lesions that are formed in the gastro intestinal mucosa due to exposure of any part of the digestive tract to acidic gastric juice. Peptic ulcers can be located in the stomach or the duodenum. The ulcer that is located in the stomach is called gastric ulcer whereas the latter is called duodenal ulcer. The most common symptoms of peptic ulcers are sharp and severe pain and discomfort in the upper abdomen. The pain is usually burning or gnawing in nature and tends to occur about an hour after meals.

Duodenal ulcer pain can occur between meals when the stomach is empty and is alleviated by food, especially milk. As the disease progresses the patient experiences distention of the stomach due to excessive flatulence, tension, insomnia and weakening of the body. Peptic ulcers can also result in constipation, and presence of blood in the stools resulting in anemia.

    Causes of peptic ulcers
Peptic ulcers are formed due to hyperacidity that is caused by an increase in the level of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. This affects the breakdown of food and can be extremely dangerous as it may eat its way through the stomach lining or the duodenum thereby, causing irritation of the stomach and eventually the formation of an ulcer. Other contributing factors are overeating, consuming heavy or spicy foods, excessive intake of coffee and tea. Intake of certain drugs such as aspirin, food poisoning, influenza and gout can also cause ulcers.

    How to treat peptic ulcers?

Diet: The diet of an individual with peptic ulcers should provide adequate nutrition to the body, rest to the disturbed organs and inhibit the production of hydrochloric acid to reduce irritation. Intake of milk, fresh fruits and vegetables and natural vitamin supplements is recommended for treating peptic ulcers. Bananas are highly beneficial for treating this condition as they neutralize the effect of over acidity caused by gastric juices and coat the stomach lining, thereby reducing irritation. Banana and milk is considered to be the best diet for patients suffering from peptic ulcers.

Cabbage for the ulcers: Cabbage is also highly beneficial for dealing with this condition. Take a cabbage and boil it in water, cool and take it twice a day for reducing irritation of the ulcers and promoting healing.

Water therapy: A patient suffering from peptic ulcers should drink about 8- 10 glasses of water everyday. However, drinking water during or with meals should be avoided. It is best to drink water about half an hour before or after the meals. Alternate hot and cold hip baths for 10- 15 minutes and the application of a mud pack on the lower abdomen for half an hour helps heal the ulcers. It is recommended to do this on an empty stomach followed by a walk.
