How to recognize eczema?

  • Eczema is a dermal ailment that literally means ‘to boil’. It results in the inflammation of the skin causing vesicles and pustules. Eczema is a broad term that is used to indicate a variety of skin conditions resulting from inflammation. Though it can occur at any point of time, infants and children are most susceptible to it.

    Learn to recognize eczema:
    Eczema, in its acute form can be recognized by swelling and redness of the skin formation of vesicles and severe heat. In case, the vesicles rupture a moist surface begins to form on the skin which exudes a serum or discharge. On accumulation, this discharge forms crusts. This is accompanied by intense itching and the crusts may become infected by bacteria.

    Causes of eczema:
    The exact cause of eczema is still unknown. However, allergies to various substances such as soap, detergents, metals and foods can cause eczema. The failure of the body to expel poisonous substances and high levels of toxicity can also result in this skin disease.

    How can eczema be treated?

    Diet: The diet of an individual suffering from eczema must comprise of fresh fruits and lots of raw or steamed vegetables. Alfalfa, soybeans, honey, vegetable oil and yeast should be included in the diet. Intake of salt, fried fatty foods, tea, coffee, alcohol, highly flavored dishes, spices, condiments, pickles and processed, fermented or canned foods should be avoided.

    Oils for treating eczema: Coconut oil should be applied liberally over eczema affected areas. This helps the crusts stay soft and reduces inflammation and itching.

    The oil of linseed mixed with a little lime juice is also highly recommended for external application over eczema affected parts.

    Evening primrose oil is also highly effective for getting rid of eczema.  It contains a high concentration of the fatty acid GLA and helps reduce inflammation, itching, oozing and flaking of the skin.

    Herbal remedies for Eczema: Wild oats are highly beneficial for treating eczema. They can be added to therapeutic baths for treating eczema effectively.

    Chamomile is also recommended by herbalists for combating eczema. It is known to possess antibacterial, antifungal and antiallergenic properties and can be used as oil added to a cool relaxing bath or lotion to treat skin inflammation and eczema. It not only promotes healing but also prevents bacterial infection.
