How to reduce skin chafing
Chafing is usually caused by rubbing between two parts of the body, or repeated friction in some part of the skin. Though it’s a relatively mild condition, it can be extremely irritating because it usually causes burning and severely itchy skin.
Inner parts of the body (like the inner thighs) are more susceptible to chafing. Irritation in the groin area during chafing can even make walking painful. Armpits, breasts and nipples, feet area etc. are also more prone to chafing than other parts of skin.
Chafing is more likely to be experienced by obese people because of increased pressure and friction in skin parts. Athletes and people prone to more physical labor also suffer from chafing. Tropical countries are more vulnerable, especially places with hot and humid summers. Chafing is aggravated if the skin perspires heavily and the sweat isn’t allowed to dry off. Skin exposed to rough or coarse clothing can also develop friction wounds.
Diet and lifestyle
For people suffering from irritation in inner parts of the body due to chafing, it is essential to stop wearing rough, coarse and tight clothes. 100% cotton clothes are highly recommended and clothing should be light and loose enough to allow air to freely flow through the inner parts of the body and prevent sweat and moisture from accumulating.
Unwashed clothes shouldn’t be worn. For women suffering from skin chafing near breast/genital areas, bras and panty hoses should be fresh, light-colored and loose. Similarly, men who suffer from chafing around groin areas should preferably wear boxer shorts.
A diet rich in Vitamins A, B1, D, E is very good for the skin and helps prevent skin irritation. Foods rich in these vitamins, especially carrots, fresh fruits, green vegetables and milk can prevent other skin infections as well.
Treatment
Aloe Vera extracts have been noted for providing relief from burning in the skin.
Zinc oxide paste relieves and cleans the skin and can be applied on affected areas.
For athletes and working people, applying petroleum jelly around the feet can prevent skin from rubbing by making it slippery.
A lot of herbs possess skin-relieving properties. A good example is Haemafine Syrup, which prevents skin wounds and infections. It also detoxifies blood and reduces the probability of skin diseases.
