Panic attacks are a debility occurrence brought on by intense levels of anxiety caused by things that happen in life.  When a person has a panic attack he/she loses control over ability to function.  They experience a tight feeling in their chest, the inability to breathe, high heart beat, hot or cold sweats, tremors, cramps, and dizziness.

Most people experience a panic attack at least once in their life.  But some people suffer from constant panic attacks.  This condition is known as panic disorder or general anxiety disorder.  These people live in constant fear of the next attack and may also become reclusive to avoid any external triggers.  Those suffering from panic attacks require an immediate remedy.  Following are some tips to help alleviate the pain and discomfort of panic attacks.

The first step to limiting the amount or severity of panic attacks is to avoid stimulants.  Stimulants such as caffeine, cigarettes, illegal drugs, and energy promoting supplements such as ginseng can lead to panic attacks.

Stress is one of the key contributors to inducing a panic attack.  Stress is not healthy for anyone.  By lowering your stress levels your susceptibility to having a panic attack becomes reduced.  Focus on meditating during the day and evening to alleviate stress.

Take a deep breath.  Controlled breathing exercises can help prevent a panic attack from coming on and can reduce the severity of the attack.  Focus on breathing in through the nose and slowly releasing it from your mouth.

Panic attacks bring the sufferer frightening symptoms such as chest pain, difficult breathing, sweating, and dizziness.  Become aware of these symptoms and assure yourself that they are only the result of a panic attack and not caused by a more serious condition such as a heart attack.

When you are having a panic attack, talk to yourself.  Explain to yourself that this is a temporary feeling and will not result in anything fatal.  Tell yourself that there is nothing to be afraid of.

If your panic attacks starts to come more often or the symptoms hinder you from functioning properly, speak with your doctor or consult a therapist.  Just like your primary care physician, a psychiatrist is there to help you with your illness.  The psychiatrist will work on helping you identify the cause of your attack and treat you accordingly.
