  • All of us feel drained out at some point of time. Be it after a long day’s work or after going on that much sought after hike in the countryside. One we take proper rest, we overcome the tiredness and feel fresh and energetic once again. Chronic fatigue however, is a serious problem in which the individual constantly feels tired and weary, even if no physical labor is involved.

Chronic fatigue can be the outcome of various factors, particularly compulsiveness, a personality trait in which the individual refuses to take rest unless every task has been finished. Such individuals are also known as perfectionists and are unable to relax unless they complete the whole job, irrespective of how tired they may be. Other causes of chronic fatigue are intake of a faulty diet, anemia, sleep deprivation, long hours of work, stress, low blood sugar, sluggish thyroid, liver damage, food allergies, mental tension and intake of certain drugs.

    Treatment of chronic fatigue:
    Diet:
The diet of an individual suffering from chronic fatigue must comprise of all the essential vitamins and minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and essential fatty acids. All food groups such as seeds, nuts and grains, fruits and vegetables should be included in the diet. Small mid-meal snacks should be introduced in the diet in the form of sandwiches, energy drinks, fruit salads and energy bars. This helps fight fatigue naturally and effectively.

Vitamin and mineral supplements: Lack of pantothenic acid and Vitamin B complex can lead to chronic fatigue. Dietary sources of vitamin B are wheat, whole grain cereals, green leafy vegetables, milk, nuts, peas, yeast and pulses. Potassium is also required for the release of energy for combating fatigue. Calcium supplements also help relax the mind, combat insomnia and mental tension and treat fatigue effectively. Iron is also required for replenishing the energy reserves of the body and for dealing with anemia, a condition which is responsible for causing fatigue.

Ginseng: This herb is widely recommended by herbalists across the world for treating chronic fatigue. It is found in numerous health drinks and beverages worldwide and can be taken everyday instead of tea or coffee for treating fatigue. This herb is also considered to be an ‘adaptogen’ that enhances the body’s capacity to adapt to various daily life stressors effectively.
