  • Gout is a sub-type of arthritis also known as gouty arthritis and is characterized by severe inflammation and pain of the affected joint.  It can affect a single or multiple joints at one time and is a very agonizing disorder. An attack of gout hits the big toe which causes it to swell and become tender.  It is accompanied by inflammation and excruciating pain. Touching or moving the affected area can be extremely painful. Such an attack usually subsides on its own within 5-7 days and may reoccur after a few weeks, months or even years. Gout usually attacks the feet, ankles, hands, wrists and knees.

Gout is caused due to increased levels of uric acid in the blood. Other causes include indigestion, excessive consumption of alcohol, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, consuming opposite foods and excessive intake of salty, fried, sour or spicy foods.
