  • Hypercholesterolemia is a medical condition that arises as a result of the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood. It is not an ailment in itself but is regarded as a risk factor for other diseases, particularly, cardiovascular disease.

Hypercholesterolemia can be caused by various factors such as diet, heredity factors and the presence of other ailments such as thyroid disorder and diabetes. The initial stages of Hypercholesterolemia are not accompanied by any symptoms. Thus, the only way to get an early detection of the problem is by going in for regular blood tests.  Advanced stages of Hypercholesterolemia can result in enlargement of the liver and spleen, xanthoma, pancreatitis, artery blockage and heart attack.

    Lowering cholesterol levels naturally:
There are various natural cures for hypercholesterolemia that can be used to lower the levels of cholesterol and prevent the onset of other diseases. These include:

Policosanol: This is the natural extract of plant waxes and is used as a dietary supplement to lower the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body. It helps prevent atherosclerosis by enabling the liver to cut down its production of cholesterol.

Guggul supplements: Guggul is also known as commiphora mukul and is quite beneficial for controlling cholesterol. It decreases the level of bad (LDL) cholesterol and increases the level of good (HDL) cholesterol in the body. Guggul dietary supplements are available in the form of capsules and can be taken by individuals of all age groups.

    Garlic:
Garlic has been used since ancient times to treat heart disease and plays a vital role in lowering the level of LDL cholesterol.  Garlic is treasured for its antioxidant properties and works by preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, thereby decreasing the build-up of cholesterol that blocks the arteries.

Fish oil: Fish such as sardines, mackerel and salmon abound in omega-3 fatty acid and are known to reduce the level of LDL cholesterol in the body. Fish oil is known to decrease the production of triglycerides and thins the blood. It also enhances the production of HDL or good cholesterol, thereby preventing hypercholesterolemia.
