  • Leucoderma literally means ‘white skin’ and is also known as vitiligo. It is one of the most distressing skin disorders that causes a great deal of mental agony to the sufferer. This condition is the outcome of a gradual loss of pigment known as melanin from the skin that results in the formation of white patches.

Leucoderma might not cause any direct harm to the individual’s health but causes immense psychological distress due to the social stigma attached to it. As per research, almost 1% of the entire population is affected by this disorder which mostly strikes the neck, face, hands and back.

Leucoderma usually begins as a small white spot and later develops into patches. These patches are initially pale in color but become white with time due to loss of melanin. These patches combine to form a large patch and may even cover the entire skin. This disorder is not caused by germs and is not contagious in nature.

Some of the most prominent causes of Leucoderma include mental tension, impaired liver function such as jaundice, typhoid, burn injuries, gastric disorders and worms in the alimentary canal. Hereditary factors and hormonal imbalance can also contribute to the development of this condition.
