Natural cure for Scurvy
Scurvy is, perhaps, the oldest known deficiency disease. The disease is common among children and is often mistaken for rickets, rheumatism or paralysis. Scurvy is caused due to lack of vitamin C or ascorbic acid. Inadequate intake of fresh fruit and vegetables can lead to scurvy.
Another important cause of scurvy is stress which increases the utilization of ascorbic acid in the body. The onset of scurvy is gradual and steady. The first signs of the disease are exhaustion and general weakness in the body. At the later stages, there is heavy bleeding of the gums, because the deficiency of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) makes the capillaries fragile and their rupture is common. This may lead to haemorrhaging.
The use of lemon and lime is highly helpful in the prevention and treatment of scurvy. Being rich sources of vitamin C, lemon and lime are regarded as foods of exceptional therapeutic value. The juice of one lime or lemon mixed in a glass of lukewarm water, with a teaspoon of honey, should be taken for treating this condition.
The Indian gooseberry is the rich source of vitamin C. 1kg of Dry Indian gooseberry should be powdered with two cup of sugar. This powder should be given in doses of one teaspoon, three times daily, with hot milk.
Amla dietary supplements
The amla taken with honey is useful in preserving the eyesight. It has one of the richest concentrations of natural vitamin C that boosts immunity. It is good for Scurvy.
Jaundice berry is good herbal remedy fur scurvy. The leaves of the plant are anti-scurvy or anti-scorbutic. A decoction of the leaves can be prepared by boiling 15 gm of dried leaves in 500 ml of water till it is reduced by one-third level. About 150 to 175 ml of the decoction can be had at a time. The juice of the berry is also helpful and can be taken in doses of 2 to 4 ml.
