Natural remedies for colitis
Inflammation of the colon is also known as Colitis. This disease results from prolonged irritation and inflammation of the delicate membrane which lines the walls of the colon.
Chronic ulcerative colitis is a severe prolonged inflammation of the colon or large bowel, in which ulcers form on the walls of the colon. An individual may suffer from constipation alternating with diarrhoea or persistent diarrhoea for years together, bloated feeling, and insomnia. The patient is generally malnourished and may be severely underweight.
Rice has low fiber content, and is, therefore, extremely soothing in colitis. A thick gruel of rice mixed with a cup of buttermilk and a ripe banana, given twice a day, forms a very good nutritious, well-balanced diet in this disease.
Drinking the water of one tender coconut daily has been found a good remedy for colitis. It is very effective in soothing the soft mucosa of the colon.
A large glass of buttermilk consumed daily is an effective remedy for colitis. It is the residual liquid left over by churning after the fat has been removed from curd.
Haritaki-Terminalia chebula
Terminalia chebula has been used as an astringent and is the best bowel cleanser. The herb also possesses antibacterial and anti-oxidant properties. It is also said to promote wisdom, intellect, and eyesight. It is mild laxative and upto certain extent carminative too. Terminalia chebula is also used for treating ulcers, vomiting, colic pain, urinary infections, diabetes, skin diseases, stomach upset and haemmorhoids
The juice of wheat-grass used as an enema, helps detoxify the walls of the colon. The general procedure is to first give an enema with warm water. After waiting for twenty minutes, 100-120 ml of wheat-grass juice enema is given. This should be retained for twenty minutes. This enema is beneficial in disorders associated with colitis. Wheat-grass can easily be grown at home in earthen pots or in backyard garden if it is not available through dealers.
