Natural Remedies for Sunburn

  • Those ultra-violet rays shooting out of the sun may look harmless enough but they can cause some serious damage to your unprotected skin. That perfect summer tan may look good on you right now but how will you look ten or twenty years down the road after your skin has been burned repeatedly?  The sun is well known for causing the skin to age prematurely.

Many people don’t consider “sunburn” to be as serious as any other types of burns. They believe that something actually has to be “on fire” in order for it to be damaged. The truth is the sun causes irreparable injury to the skin. Skin that is continuously subjected to the sun’s harmful rays will eventually become dry, aged, rough, and leathery. In addition, the skin can develop cancer as a result of too much exposure to the sun.

Millions of people place a high value on getting a good tan in the summer months, so much that they sunbathe for hours on end in hopes of having brown skin. What they fail to realize is that, although the skin looks good now, they will age before their time.

    Sensible precautions
There are many precautions you can take to protect your precious skin from being sun-damaged.  Here are a few of the most common ones:  protect your head from sunburn by wearing hats or scarves, wear sunglasses or goggles to protect your eyes, apply sunscreen before leaving home in the daytime, use an umbrella for protection if you go walking in the sun, wear light-colored clothing (not only does it reflect the sun, it keeps you cooler), keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water and fruit juices (hydrated skin does not burn as easily as dry skin).

    Home remedies for Sunburn
If you already have sunburn, there are still remedies you can use to speed up the healing process and reduce the amount of pain caused by the burn.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and fruit juices – carry water with you if you know you will be in the sun for a long period of time.

Wash your burned areas with antibacterial soap and pat them dry with a towel (never rub burned skin).

Eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables to stay healthy; do not place bandages on your burned skin; use apple cider vinegar or aloe vera gel to soothe the burned skin; wash your burned skin with paste made of baking soda and water – this provides soothing pain relief; soak oatmeal in water, then apply to burned skin
