Ringworm is a skin disease caused by the action of fungus that usually affects the scalp, the body, feet and nails. Ringworm of the scalp is a common occurrence in children and is caused due to lack of protective fatty acids on the scalp. Boys are more prone to developing ringworm infection than girls.
This disease spreads on the skin and infects the hair roots as well as the hair strands. This causes the hair to become lifeless and break off resulting in bald patches on the scalp. Ringworm patches are usually round or oval with raised space in the center. The itching in the infected parts spreads the infection through the nails to other parts of the body. If left untreated, it may become chronic and highly difficult to treat.
Ringworm of the body usually affects the face and neck. Ringworm of the feet is also known as Athlete’s foot and is more common during the summer. It is transferred through swimming pools, bath mats, bath tubs and other places where fungus can thrive. Ringworm is transferred from one individual to another by direct contact, use of infected towels, clothes etc.
