  • The cold, winter air causes dry skin in just about everyone.  People of all ages, genders, and nationalities experience rough, red skin due to the harsh effects of winter.  The dryness occurs in all exposed parts of the body (face, hands, neck) and even affects the parts that usually remain covered (legs, thighs, arms).

Do costly skin products make good on their claims?
Literally hundreds of commercial products exist that claim they can “cure” your dry, scaly skin but many of them cost a great deal and usually don’t deliver on their promises.

Even prescription products you get from your dermatologist cost a fortune and don’t always work.

There are some home remedies you can try that will likely do a better job of soothing your skin than the expensive products found in the store.  They will add moisture to your skin and help you retain the moisture that is already present.

    Home remedies for Winter dryness
Add 1 tsp honey to a small cup of milk – apply mixture directly to face, neck, legs, and hands – leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse – this procedure is usually best done in the bathtub during your bath.

Rub olive oil directly to affected areas of the skin to re-hydrate; add honey and yogurt to 1 egg yolk – apply to dry skin – this mixture will help to soften your skin; add dry oatmeal to 1 egg yolk – apply directly to face and leave 15-20 minutes – this is good to use as a moisturizer for your face.

Make a paste from papaya and avocado – apply the paste directly to the affected skin and leave on for 20 minutes – rinse with warm water; add a small amount of honey to the pulp from mangoes, bananas, avocados, cucumbers, and grapes – apply mixture directly to dry skin and leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Use cotton to apply milk to affected skin areas – this relieves the irritation caused by dryness; apply honey directly to your dry skin for an effective moisturizer; mix mustard oil with sesame oil and olive oil – apply mixture all over the body and massage to help it become fully absorbed.

    Helpful tips
Avoid using harsh soaps to wash your dry skin – they contribute to the dryness – look, instead, for some soap-free body and face wash products.

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated; include plenty of Vitamin A-rich foods in your diet to combat dryness.
