  • Dermatitis is the external as well as internal inflammation of the skin. It is characterized by redness, swelling, heat, pain and itching on the affected area. Dermatitis can affect any part of the body but the eyelids, genitals, forearms and neck are most prone to developing this disorder.

Dermatitis varies in individuals depending upon its severity and stage. During the initial stage, it is characterized by erythema or redness. This is followed by edema or fluid retention after which vesicles may appear. Once the vesicles rupture they exude a fluid or serum. This stage is known as weeping dermatitis. The serum then dries to form crusts and fades away.

Dermatitis is caused by various factors such as exposure to several chemical substances that are highly toxic in nature, intake of certain drugs such as atropine, belladonna, iodine, carbolic acid, penicillin, mercury and tars. It can also be caused by exposure of the skin to bleaches, hair dyes, skin tonics, perfume and various detergents. Over 100 different plants areĀ  known to cause dermatitis.
