  • Malaria is a serious disease characterized by sporadic fever that has the tendency to return again and again. The term ‘malaria’ has been derived from the Italian word mala aria which literally means bad air. It is caused by a tiny parasite known as plasmodium that grows in the liver for a few days and then enters the blood stream where it attacks the red blood cells. Malaria is spread from an infected person to a healthy one by the female anopheles mosquito.

There are three types of malaria depending upon the type of parasite causing it. These are vivax, falciparum and malariae. The most common symptoms of this disease are high fever which may strike everyday, on alternate days or every fourth day. This is accompanied by chill, shivering, headache and pain in the limbs.
