Natural treatment for Menstrual Migraine

  • Menstrual migraine is a neurological disorder that affects women before the pre-menstrual syndrome and last throughout menstruation. A full blast attack can occur roughly two days before the commencement of the menstrual cycle and ends after menstruation. It is characterized by pain on one side of the head, vomiting, nausea, irritability, andĀ  increased sensitivity to light, sound and smell. Almost 60% of all migraines among women are menstrual migraines.

    Menstrual migraines can interfere with the daily life of the woman and can cause a great deal of distress every month. The main causes of this type of migraine are fluctuations in the female sex hormones, particularly estrogen before menstruation, intake of oral contraceptives, stress and tension. Certain foods can also trigger menstrual migraines such as tyramine containing foods, aged cheese, meat products, processed, fermented and pickled foods, strongly seasoned foods and preserved foods.

    Preventing Menstrual Migraines:

    Menstrual migraines can be prevented by intake of a healthy and well balanced diet comprising of all the vital vitamins and minerals. Intake of fresh fruits and vegetables is highly beneficial for combating menstrual migraine.

    Aromatherapy is also quite helpful in preventing full blast migraine attacks and can soothe the mind. The essential oils of lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, peppermint and sandalwood can prevent migraines. They can be used as cold compresses, in ice packs and as inhalants to soothe the mind.

    Ashwagandha or Winter Cherry is a potent stress buster and helps keep stress at bay. It is recommended to take Ashwagandha dietary supplements everyday for dealing with stress.

    Meditation is an age old technique that is usedĀ for calming the mind and enhancing the overall wellbeing of the body. It can be practiced for half an hour everyday to combat stress and keep all ailments at bay.

    Ginger root is used to combat headaches and nausea associated with migraines. Take a small, peeled piece of fresh ginger and nibble on it for a few minutes to get relief from the symptoms of migraine.
