Natural treatments for dealing with gout

  • Gout is a metabolic disorder caused by the formation of excessive uric acid which gets accumulated in the joints causing painful swelling mostly in the toes and feet. Gout is characterized by abrupt painful attacks accompanied by redness and tenderness of the joints. If left untreated, the pain may linger on for 5 – 10 days causing a great deal of discomfort to the sufferer.

    Natural treatment for gout:
    There are various natural remedies that can help deal with this painful condition and can be tried at home.

    Chicory is an ancient herb that is widely recommended for the treatment of gout. Chicory root can be used to get quick relief from the symptoms of gout. Take around 30 gm of chicory and add it to 300 ml of boiling water. Drink this infusion 3-4 times a day to combat gout. Alternatively, you can also use a paste of chicory root and apply it directly to the gout affected area to get relief from pain and swelling.

    Thyme is a powerful herb used for treating gout naturally and effectively. You can prepare thyme tea at home by adding 2 tsp of the powdered herb to 1 cup of boiling water. Take this twice a day for best results.

    Boswellia or shallaki is one of the best herbal remedies for treating gout. Its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties help get rid of joint stiffness, pain and tenderness, thereby combating gout. You can take Boswellia dietary supplements in the form of herbal capsules on a daily basis to promote the overall well being of the joints.

    Apple preserve is also an effective natural remedy for combating gout. Peel a few apples and slice them. Put them in a pan and add a little water to it. Let it boil for over 3 hours and simmer on low flame for about 15-20 minutes. Once the apples turn brown in color and become thick in consistency, remove the pan from the stove and put the apples in an air tight container and refrigerate. Eating this preserve on a daily basis helps keep gout at bay.

    Mustard is a commonly used spice and is easily available all across the world. You can crush mustard seeds and add them to whole wheat flour and make a paste by adding water. Put this paste on a gauze or muslin cloth and make it into a plaster. Apply some petroleum jelly on to the affected area and place the plaster on it. Keep this overnight for best results.
