  • A lot of young children and adults suffer constantly from intestinal worms and parasites. Parasites usually travel to the gastro-intestinal tract from the mouth, where they reproduce and can create a wide variety of unpleasant and sometimes dangerous symptoms. Unsafe and unsanitary food and health practices usually lead to severe parasitic infections in the intestine. The incidence of children suffering from these infections is high in tropical and developing countries.

Various kinds of worms can affect the human body. Pinworm is the most common kind which affects humans, and may spread on unwashed body parts and through unsanitary physioal contact. Roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms affect humans rarely, but may appear if you are exposed regularly to animals and pets. Ringworm is actually a fungal infection which appears as a ring-shaped circle on the skin.

Uncooked, unwashed food and unsafe water are favorite spots for parasite populations, mostly protozoa and worms. Kids may also get it if they consume food directly without washing their dirty hands. The symptoms of intestinal worm infections are wide-ranging and may include severe constipation, diarrhea, weight-loss, loss of interest in food, sudden nervousness and lethargy, severe vomiting etc. Headaches, dark spots on the skin and dark circle around eyes are also quite common.

    Safe practices

Unhygienic living and eating conditions are considered one of the biggest causes of intestinal worm infestations. Never cook any raw food without washing or boiling it properly. Children should be taught the importance of washing their hands before a meal and consuming only clean and safe food and water. Restrain from walking barefoot in dirty or overgrowing parks, as worms might get stuck to the skin of the feet.

Personal and sanitary items like towels, clothes, innerwear etc. should be kept washed and clean. If you have a fungal or parasitic infection (like a ringworm), it’s best to avoid using other peoples’ personal items.

    Diet and herbal treatment

Tough-skinned vegetables like carrots, papaya and pumpkin are very good for treatment of intestinal worm infections. These can be boiled and taken regularly.

An effective herbal supplement that can be taken is garlic (lasuna), which possesses anti-inflammatory properties and can kill parasites. Garlic can be taken raw or as supplements or even as garlic oil.
