  • Migraine is medically considered to be one of the most mysterious pains related to headaches and brain dysfunction. It is frequently misdiagnosed and under-treated, even though a human has a one-fifth chance of getting an attack at least once in his/her lifetime. Its onset may last from just a few hours, to two or three days in severe cases.

Migraine is characterized by dull, gnawing and/or throbbing headaches which persist for long periods or time and are recurring, and other reactions like nausea and sudden sensitivity in the eyes to bright light. In many cases, an ‘aura’ of increased or decreased sensations of sight, smell or hearing may occur just before the headache – a surefire sign of a migraine. In many cases, the pain is so severe that the affected person can’t concentrate on daily activities.

The exact cause of migraine is unclear, but it is agreed that migraine arises as a result of brain dysfunction, and other triggers to the body. It can also be due to abnormal activity in the cortex area of the brain. While steroids, painkillers and antidepressants are routinely given as prescriptions for any kind of migraine, these medications act as temporary relievers, and might make the patient dependent on them in the long run.

    Prevention

It has been discovered that migraine can be triggered by a lot of factors, which include diet changes. Small steps in prevention can make sure you don’t have migraine in the first place. If you are periodically allergic, or are exposed to foreign substances which trigger allergies, you have a high risk of developing migraine. Identifying the allergen and avoiding intense exposure to it helps. Similarly, reducing personal and work stress and avoiding working in excessively bright-lit and crowded areas can decrease its occurrence.

Skipping meals regularly can also cause migraine headaches. Have small meals throughout the day, even if you don’t have the time to have complete meals. Excessive active and passive smoking and alcohol consumption can lead to migraine.

    Diet and relief

Have a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. If you are suffering from a migraine and it’s not going away, switching to a highly-fruit based diet for a day or two can relieve pain. Grapes, lemons, cabbage juice are especially important. Chocolates, refined sugar, rich meat etc. should be avoided during an attack.

A lot of natural herbs have been known for reviving nerve and brain coordination, and are helpful in preventing attacks. Brahmi(Bacopa) has been advised as a good reliever of headaches for hundreds of years. Bacopa extract is available as vegetable capsules and can be taken daily.
