Prevent onset of recurring kidney stones

  • Kidney stones (also called renal calculi) have been considered to be one of the most painful conditions affecting humans. The discovery of a stone lodged in the kidney can not only cause crippling pain, it disables the patient from doing everyday work, and can be a life-threatening condition. Kidney stones used to be one of the largest causes for fatalities in earlier history, but thanks to medical breakthroughs, most stones can be treated internally, or by surgery.

The kidney stores fluid waste and transfers it to the bladder, from where it is ejected as urine. Kidney stones are caused by the deposition of minerals within the kidney, which are usually crystals of calcium oxalate and uric acid (in 80-90% of stones). Triple phosphate and other stones composed from the ingestion of various drugs may also occur. Stones persist in mostly middle-aged men, and occur less frequently in women. Living near sources of soft water, and having an ancestor or family relative with a recurring history of stones can increase its incidence in a person.

In most cases, the deposited crystals easily pass with urine and are ejected out of the bladder. However, stones with sizes greater than 3-4 mm may get dislodged in the ureter, the tube which passes urine from the kidney to the bladder. This causes unbearable pain in the kidney and pelvic region and causes build-up of urine. In many cases, bleeding and burning urine may result. Kidney stones may be recurring and in that case, extra precaution has to be put on the patient’s general diet and lifestyle.

    Preventive measures

People with recurring cases of stones, or patients recovering from a stone removal have to pay careful attention to the intake of various foods. Most stones result as a reaction between calcium foods and oxalate foods. It is advisable to avoid foods rich in oxalic acid, such as chocolate, spinach, dry fruits, green leafy vegetables, soya bean, tomato, cola beverages, soda etc. Protein-rich and salty foods may cause excess buildup of oxalate and urate crystals, so the intake of fish, meat and excessive salt should be reduced. Antacids and certain abdomen-relieving medicines may trigger the occurrence of stones.

    Diet and lifestyle

The first important step is to have a diet rich in fluid and water content. Drink at least 2-3 liters (7-8 glasses) of water daily, and have fluids even when you think you are over-drinking. Fruit juices like orange, lemon and cranberry juice are highly beneficial. Have fluids round the clock instead of drinking a lot at one go. Urinate regularly and frequently to prevent buildup of excess urine in the kidney.

A lot of natural herbal supplements can relieve pain by making urine flow easier, and by soothing the urinary tract. One good example is Rencare capsules, which can be taken daily, and are especially helpful for patients with chronic stones.
