  • The literal meaning of the word ‘arthritis’, is ‘joint inflammation’, which has been taken from the Greek words ‘athron’ and ‘itis’, the first which refers to joints and the second which signifies inflammation. This is a chronic condition having several varieties, with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis being two of the more common.

Osteoarthritis is often found in senior citizens, while rheumatoid arthritis is a much more serious condition that affects not only the joints in the feet, knees, hips, wrists and fingers but also many tissues in the body including tendons and muscles.  There seem to be a few remedial treatment methods which have been useful in curing this disease. Here they are:

A warm olive oil massage is a good way to obtain relief from pain which accompanies this disease. Make a mixture of the olive oil with sassafras oil, thyme, rosemary, sage, lavender, juniper or diluted garlic. The ratio of the mixture should be 1:10 with the 10 parts referring to the olive oil. The area that is in pain should be massaged with this. Body massages as well as steam baths have provided relief to sufferers from arthritis.

Zinc, Vitamin C and calcium rich food items must be incorporated in to the diet. Fresh potato juice first thing in the morning is a good remedy for arthritis. This juice should be constituted of 50% water and 50% potato juice. Apply vinegar on the affected area of the body before going to bed. This is an easy and simple method.

Make a mixture of 200 grams mustard oil and 10 grams camphor. Store it in a bottle and cork it tightly. Keep it in the sunlight every day till the camphor dissolves. Massage the painful areas regularly with this ointment. Four pieces of garlic peeled and ground with a couple of grams of Sprague should be dipped in 30 grams of mustard oil and heated over a low flame for a about two minutes. After it cools down massage this on to the aching joints to relieve pain and reduce swelling.

A few grams of powdered or fresh ginger drunk with water every day can help cure rheumatoid arthritis. A warm bath with 4 tablespoons of Epsom salt added in will relieve stiffness in the joints and reduce inflammation. A castor oil massage also reduces pain. If sea salt is added to a warm tub of bath water, this too is ideal to relax in and obtain some relief.

Take the pulp of one or two baked eggplant, mash and fry in castor oil.  Then add in salt, garlic, coriander, cumin, turmeric and other such spices, and then cook for a short time. Eat this daily for approximately 2/3 months.
