Simple ways to prevent urinary tract infections
Almost all women suffer from urinary bladder infection sometime in their lives. Medically known as cystitis, urinary tract infections are extremely common among adult women and some men too. Cystitis has been reported to be one of the most frequent gynecological complaints. The infection is usually noticed by symptoms like a frequent need to urinate, pain while passing urine, abnormal color and smell of urine etc. A simple urine test can determine if it’s a urinary tract infection. Cystitis can be painful, demanding and very irritating.
The majority of urinary infections are caused by the unhealthy presence of certain bacteria in the urinary bladder. Bacteria usually reach the urethra, which receives urine from the bladder. Then they swim through to reach the bladder. As more and more bacteria attach themselves to bladder walls, the bladder can hold a lesser quantity of urine at one point of time. This leads to a feeling of frequent urination, and causes most other symptoms of cystitis. Its incidence among men is lower because bacteria find it more difficult to reach the male bladder.
In sexually active women, E. Coli is the bacteria that usually attaches itself to the bladder. Sexually active women are at a slightly higher risk of developing cystitis, though the infection occurs in sexually inactive women and young girls too. The infection is common in older men and women, as it gets aggravated by other bladder problems and by reduced body movement.
Urinary infection is a serious issue and if it’s not prevented in early stages, it tends to reach the kidneys, and to other organs related to urine. Cystitis is normally treated by using a diverse range of antibiotics, but affected women can try a range of healthy practices to relieve the problem themselves.
Patients usually reduce the amount of water they drink, thinking that it would reduce the frequency of urination. However, drinking more water makes urine flow better, and prevents bacteria from sticking to bladder walls. It is advisable to urinate immediately after sexual intercourse, to avoid the risk of an increased number of bacteria entering the urethra. Avoid foods that irritate the bladder, especially caffeinated beverages like coffee. Slightly acidic juices like cranberry juice are highly recommended, because it eases the passing of urine through bladder walls.. Herbs like Saraca Indica act as pain relievers and prevent urinary bleeding.
