  • The inability to sleep at all is called insomnia.  The term can also refer to other sleep disorders as well, including trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or a combination of two or more of such disorders.  Sleep disorders affect a large number of the population and are particularly prevalent among the upper classes of society.  It is not surprising that more and more people are developing these sleep disorders, considering today’s modern day stressors and fast-paced lives.

    Causes
The many causes of insomnia are stress and worry (either mental or emotional), anxiety,
feeling angry, resentful, or bitter about something you consider important, feeling excited or nervous, feeling overworked, feeling bored, constipation, eating too much (especially before going to bed), eating too little and feeling hungry (when going to bed), and worrying about being able to fall asleep.

    Symptoms
Some of the symptoms of insomnia are difficulty falling or staying asleep, changes in sleep patterns, waking up prematurely after a short amount of sleep, memory lapses (forgetfulness), difficulty concentrating or focusing during the daytime hours, mental confusion, balance or coordination problems, extreme fatigue, restlessness, frustration over minor things, irritability, and impatience.

    Home remedies for Insomnia
Drink 1 glass of milk with honey before going to bed each night. This will calm and soothe you; boil 1 tablespoon of lettuce seeds in water.  Drink the mixture for its sedative-like effects; mix 2 tsp honey in water and drink before going to bed.  This has a hypnotic effect and will help you sleep.

Massage curd into the head area to help bring on sleep; eat foods rich in thiamine, such as wholegrain cereals and nuts, or take thiamine supplements, to help you relax; mix equal amounts of gourd juice and sesame oil and massage into the scalp to relieve insomnia.

    Helpful Tips
Exercise regularly to improve sleep quality, practice yoga to benefit from its calming effects, reduce stress in your life, attempt to go to bed at the same time every night, wake up at the same time each morning, take soothing baths in the tub before going to bed each night, and eat a well-balanced diet.
