Symptoms and Treatment of Menopause

  • Menopause usually strikes women in their mid-to-late forties or their early fifties.  During menopause menstruation stops, as it signifies the end of the reproductive stage of their life.  This happens because the ovaries lower their production of estrogen, which is an important female hormone.  Menopause can happen naturally or as a result of having a hysterectomy.

Menopause is considered a normal event for all women but often causes many disagreeable and troubling changes in their lives.  Some women do not experience a great deal of difficulty.  Adapting to their changing reproductive system can take a toll on women and the whole menopausal process can last over many months or even years.

    Causes of Menopause
The main causes of menopause are normal cessation of menstruation (due to estrogen production being reduced), lowered levels of estrogen or no estrogen in the bloodstream (due to reasons other than normal change-of-life menopause), abnormal hormonal balance, and hysterectomy.

    Symptoms of Menopause
Some of the many symptoms of menopause include hot flashes, insomnia, night sweats, tension, bad temper, mental & emotional problems, cessation of menstruation, irritability, headaches, nausea, fatigue, numbness, weight gain, backache, osteoporosis, instability, confusion, low self esteem, and loss of interest in sex.

    Medical Treatments for Menopause
Medical treatments may include hormone treatment (including pills, patches, or shots), anti-depressants (for depression caused by menopause) and prescription or non-prescription pain relievers (for frequent headaches/migraines caused by menopause).

    Home remedies for Menopause
Here are a few effective home remedies for treating the symptoms of menopause.

Drink 60 to 90 ml of beet juice 3 times a day to help with menopause symptoms; boil 1 tsp of carrot seeds in cow’s milk for 10 minutes.  Take daily for tension; take 2 grams of spikenard daily to help your nervous system; take 1 tsp of liquorice powder daily because liquorice contains estrogen; take calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium supplements (as directed on the package).

    Diet
Follow a diet rich in vitamin E foods.  Eat plenty of seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fresh fruits; avoid processed, refined, or unnatural foods completely.

    Helpful Tips
Get plenty of sleep every night, reduce stress in your life, and get outdoor exercise several times per week, such as swimming, walking, cycling, or jogging.
Stop using tobacco products; reduce your intake of alcoholic beverages; drink plenty of water (8 to 10 glasses each day).

There are several herbal remedies for menopause symptoms too. Using plant based phytoestrogens like black cohosh and passionflower can help ease hot flashes and taking them can be an effective hormone replacement therapy.
