  • Our entire lives we’ve been told that we need to get more Vitamin C. After all eating plenty of vitamin C reduces our chances of several different kinds of cancer, clears up some skin conditions, and boosts our immune system. Based on this information we sit in the sun and eat tons of citrus fruit, we assume that we can’t get too much Vitamin C. The truth is that it is possible to get a Vitamin C overdose.

The good new is that a Vitamin C overdose isn’t going to kill you; it will however make you very uncomfortable.

Women who are pregnant need to monitor how much Vitamin C they consume each day. A vitamin C overdose doesn’t just affect them; it can also cause the unborn fetus to develop an overdose. The effect a Vitamin C overdose would have on a fetus would depend on how developed the child was, and what organs where forming.

    The First Sign

The first signs of a Vitamin C overdose are gas, painful bloating, and diarrhea. When you start to develop these symptoms you should exchange your morning glass of orange juice for a glass of milk and something with some fiber.

    The Second Signs

Ignoring the first symptoms of a Vitamin C overdose will lead to another round of symptoms, these ones a little more painful. Symptoms of a more severe Vitamin C overdose are fatigue, a nagging headache, persistent nausea, frequent urination, slow metabolism; sever abdominal cramps, and a difficult time sleeping. As soon as you develop any of these symptoms you should completely remove all sources of vitamin C from your diet. Even after the symptoms disappear you should wait several days before reintroducing Vitamin C to your system. After a severe Vitamin C overdose you should start recording how much Vitamin C you eat on a daily basis.

    The Threat of Kidney Stones

The most severe side effect of a Vitamin C overdose is the formation of kidney stones. Not only are kidney stones not very good for your kidneys, they are extremely painful to pass, and can lead to a costly stay at your local hospital.
