  • What are Lichen Striatus?
The disease lichen striatus is a type of eczema which is uncommon and occurs primarily in young children. Just like lichen planus, lichen striatus also starts with lesions that appear as small, firm papules; within a few days you will find that a band or long streak is formed on the skin. This will be linear and itchy. This is a rash with small, raised bumps. It normally appears on the legs and arms, but they can occur anywhere on the body. It has been found that females are more susceptible for this disease. The ratio of occurrence of this disease in females to males is about 2 to 3. More often it occurs in children who are less than sixteen years old.

    What causes Lichen Striatus?
The reason for the occurrence of lichen striatus has not still been established; however, it is neither dangerous nor contagious. It affects mainly children in the age group five to fifteen years. This has no relationship with cancer; also, no internal organs are involved.

    What are Lichen Striatus Symptoms?
To start with, lichen striatus is small spots that have the colors red, pink, or are flesh-colored; these spots join with each other and form a red linear band that is scaly. This happens within a period of 1 or 2 weeks.  The width of this band normally varies between 2 mm. and 2 cm .whereas the length of the band could be a few centimeters or could extend throughout the limb. Although there are no serious symptoms due to this, people affected express that they have itching varying from mild to intense.

There are times when you find that there are two bands that are parallel to each other. At any point in time these lesions occur on either one arm or one leg; however, this can also affect the trunk or neck. At times you will find that this band goes beyond the leg to abdomen or buttock.

    How to treat Lichen Striatus
The disease lichen striatus does not have any particular treatment. It normally disappears without any treatment within a period of 6 months to 12 months. It is possible to reduce itching or dryness by using topical steroids or emollients. In addition, you can also use cortisone ointments as well as creams to treat lichen striatus.
