Treatment for Skin Tags
Small pieces of accumulated skin that can be seen protruding from the skin are called skin tags. Usually it is attached to the skin by a stalk and is the same colour as the rest of the skin around it. As a rule, skin tags are painless and completely harmless. In such cases it is not necessary to have then removed.
However if you find the skin tagĀ bothersome or making you look unattractive, it can quite easily be removed. You could have it attended to by a doctor, or you could even remove them at home. Detailed below are both of these options for your information.
The Cutting of Skin Tags
The better method of eliminating skin tags is to use a scissor or scalpel to cut them off. Make sure whichever instrument you select to use has a good, sharp blade, and then sterilize it by cleaning it with hydrogen peroxide, holding over a flame or wiping it with rubbing alcohol. Cut the skin tags as close to your skin as possible. Have some antiseptic and cotton in hand in case you should bleed. To deaden the area around he skin tag you can apply some ice to it before you embark on this process. This will alleviate the pain.
Freezing
Much less painful is the method for removing skin tags by freezing them. In this process you need to have liquid nitrogen to use [cyrotherapy]. Liquid nitrogen is in fact commonly used for the treatment of skin growths. The application of this agent on skin tags causes the cell tissues to die easily and quickly. This method is hardly painful at all but later scarring might sometimes be seen. It must be remembered that liquid nitrogen must not be used on the same skin area more often than on a weekly basis.
Electrolysis or Electro Surgery
Electrolysis or Electro Surgery is also an effective way to destroy skin tags. This method however should be carried out by a doctor or a professionally qualified person. In this process an electric needle will be inserted into the area surrounding the skin tag. This needle has the effect of not only destroying the skin tag but also any other growth found under the skin. A usually speedy and permanent process, electro surgery can result in a small degree of scarring.
Blocking the Blood Supply
Here is another procedure by which you could remove a skin tag. Tie a string or a thread close to the healthy part of the skin. When no more blood is flowing to the skin tag, it would gradually get dried out and drop off. However you should check that this string is tied adequately tightly so that the blood supply is actually cut off. Get someone to help you to do this.
