  • Bulimia is a very serious eating disorder. When a person is bulimic, they’re caught in a nasty cycle of binge eating and then throwing everything back up. In addition to forcing themselves to throw up, many bulimics also resort to abusing enemas and laxatives in a desperate attempt to lose weight

There are several health problems associated with bulimia. The stomach acid usually causes the bulimic person to have bad breath and, if the bulimia goes on for very long, the enamel on their teeth will start to wear away. They have several nutritional deficiencies, are constantly fatigued, and become very weak. In severe cases, the bulimic person will look like they are wasting away.

    Seek Professional Help

One of the first things you need to do when you are trying to help someone with their bulimia is to work on fixing their self image. Most people develop an eating disorder because they suffer from a poor body image. The bulimic’s self image is usually so distorted that they will usually have to seek intensive therapy. In many cases, the person will be in therapy for the rest of their life.

Don’t try to treat a person’s bulimia on your own. The kindest thing you can do for the bulimic is to get them enrolled in a treatment program where they will be surrounded by people who have experience dealing with both the bulimic’s nutritional and psychological needs.

    Act Quickly

One of the keys in successfully treating bulimia is to get the person help right away. The sooner the person starts treatment for their bulimia, the better the chances of them actually getting cured. People who have had a history of any type of eating disorder have a greater chance of developing the same disorder later in their life.

    Be Supportive

When someone you love is struggling with bulimia, it is critical that you remain cheerful and positive about their chances of recovery. The only time you should be critical of the recovering bulimic is if you suspect that they are starting to fall back into their old eating patterns. When you are helping a recovering bulimic, you should speak to the professionals and find out what you should expect when they leave the treatment center.
