Triphala for the treatment of constipation for a stomach cancer patient

Dear Sir,
1)My brother had got operated and removed cancer lump from stomach in Dec2007.After operation he was progressing well for a year till he went for a routine check up.Cancer now spread to the liver.He is taking pain killers resulting in constipation. Can we administer TRIPHALA tablets to regularize his motion? DOSAGE?
2)Secondly,can a normal person @65 years take TRIPHALA tablets regularly not to have now and then age related constipation due to VATA imbalance . Eagerly waiting your advice,
