What is color blindness?

Color blindness is a condition in which people have inability to see certain colors. People with color blindness are unable to see blue, red, green or combinations of these colors. Most color blind people may not be able to recognize different shades of colors and, some cannot recognize colors at all. Color blindness can lead to additional vision loss or total blindness. It is found that colorblind is more in males than females.

Causes

Color blindness results from malfunction or absence of certain color-sensitive cells in the retina. Some time it may be due to heditary.

Certain chronic illnesses, such as leukemia, chronic alcoholism, multiple sclerosis Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, glaucoma and liver disease can cause color blindness.

Traumas caused by accidents or strokes can also cause color blindness. Certain medications, such as antibiotics and drugs used to treat nervous disorders, tuberculosis and high blood pressure can lead to color blindness.

Industrial toxins such as fertilizers, carbon monoxide, carbon disulfide, and chemicals that include lead can also lead to this disease. People are at higher risk after the age of sixty.

Treatment

There is no particular treatment for color blindness. Most people with this disorder learn to live with the problem and try to adjust to it.

Prevention

Inherited color blindness cannot be prevented but acquired color blindness can be prevented if all possible causes of the disorder can be avoided. A well balanced diet and proper eye care is a must to safeguard your eyes.
