Why do Women Experience Irregular Menstrual Cycles?

  • Women may experience irregular menstrual cycles for many reasons.  An irregular period cycle may occur due to problems with the woman’s thyroid, if she is under stress, if the woman lacks an adequate amount of iron in her body (anemia), if she has problems with her weight, or if she partakes in vigorous exercise. 

    Most young women begin to get their periods when they are thirteen years old and continue to get their periods until the approximate age of fifty.  A normal menstruation cycle runs every twenty-eight days but it can go as long as every thirty-four days.  A healthy menstrual cycle has the date of menstruation appearing at approximately the same time each month within a five day window.  A woman with a healthy menstrual cycle will see their period about thirteen times a year and a whopping 450 times during their lifetime.

    The menstrual blood is controlled by the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.  When the woman is about to get her period, the uterus lining becomes thick and the estrogen in the woman’s body causes the blood vessels to increase.  The progesterone causes the cells that line the uterus to mature and become filled with the chemicals necessary for pregnancy.  If a woman does not become pregnant her hormone levels decrease.  The uterus lining will break open and expel the chemicals.  This is when the bleeding happens.

    If a woman is not getting regular periods she needs to find out why she is not getting regular periods and possibly avoid the actions that are causing her periods to become irregular.  It is important to live a fit and healthy lifestyle.  That means keeping the body hydrated by drinking plenty of water and juice.  Water and juice will flush the harmful toxins out of the body.  Women should also eat a well balanced diet full of dark leafy green vegetables, whole grains and fruit.  Women should not smoke cigarettes nor should they drink alcohol.  They should partake in regular exercise such as yoga or walking.

    If a woman experiences irregular periods she should try some of the following remedies.  Try drinking a mixture of beet root and carrot juice every day for a few months.  Eat half a teaspoon of fennel seeds or add fenugreek sprouts to a meal.
